Real beauty is versatile, fluid, and often sensible—all the characteristics of this 4-season vacation home design. The main-floor family room with fireplace and soaring cathedral ceiling shares its wide-open atmosphere with an eat-in-kitchen. A large main-floor bedroom with walk-in closet utilizes an adjacent full bath. With two bedrooms on the second floor (or one super-sized bedroom), plus master bath, there’s enough comfort to go around. With its stately pillars, sweeping staircase and sprawling outdoor living space, this gracious home imparts the classic spirit of Southern luxury. First impressions inside reveal formal rooms flanking the foyer, and beyond, a gallery area adorned by the graceful sweep of a staircase. The living room, music room and octagonal library flow together as one exquisite space in which to relax and entertain.A deep, covered front porch shelters the entry of this stylish one-story home, designed with plenty of personal space. Once inside, the foyer lends immediate views to the formal dining room and library, which could serve as a home office. At the core of the home, the kitchen opens to the breakfast area and family room, which is located at the rear as a secluded retreat. This plan was designed with the active family in mind. The living areas of the plan are basically open to each other – separated only by architectural elements, not solid walls. The living and dining rooms, for example, are defined from one another by columns and ceiling details. To accommodate those who work at home, bedroom #2 could also double as an office. In the master bedroom, take note of the window placement. To complement the main set of windows, we placed smaller windows just around the corner.

Being Well Insulated
You know it’s there, but you rarely give it a thought—unless the temperature inside your house won’t stay at a comfortable level.

We’re talking about the insulation in your home’s walls, attic, and beneath its floors. If there’s not enough insulation, it can be added to an existing home. However, the best time to make sure your house is thoroughly insulated is during construction.

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that heating and cooling make up 50% to 70% of energy use in the typical American home. Inadequate insulation and air leakage can cause much of this energy to escape, leading to high utility bills. For the sake of the environment, your wallet, and your family’s comfort, make the proper insulation of your new home a top priority... To read more Click Here.

“Building Green”
By David Porter AIA
Consulting architect to the Garlinghouse Company since 1989.

By now, you have probably heard loads about everything “green” – building green, living a more “green” lifestyle, and on and on. “Green” is the new, overly used, buzzword thrown at you from twenty directions each day. What is this new-fangled movement, what does it do for you, your family, your neighbors, your community, and anywhere else in the world as it relates to building a simple, little house for your family?

The “green movement” is not actually that new. It has been in the works for about the past 12 years. However, it is just now beginning to catch on with government agencies and major corporations, so they all bring it to us as new news. With global warming getting accepted as a grim reality, agencies, nations, and people are looking at ways to stop earth from overheating. The design and construction of buildings play a big part in that solution... To read more Click Here.
