ABOUT THE GARLINGHOUSE COMPANY
The year was 1907. Theodore Roosevelt was president. America’s first gas station began filling thirsty tanks. Oklahoma became the 47th state. And Lewis F. Garlinghouse got an idea for a new way to promote his construction business. Garlinghouse started displaying photographs and floor plans of his bungalow designs in the window of a local Topeka, Kansas bank. His designs quickly grabbed the attention of homebuilders and buyers, and before long, Garlinghouse made the decision to begin printing his home plans. The rest is, as they say, history.

One hundred years later the demand for home plans from Garlinghouse continues. We’ve come a long way from displaying home plans in bank windows. Today, we offer access to over 18,000 home plans on the Internet and through home plan books available in bookstores from coast to coast.

Smarter Designs

FROM THE DESIGNER’S PERSPECTIVE

Affordably Upscale

The concept behind this house was simple; design an affordable house with as many upscale features as possible. We wanted to cater to the first time home buyer, or the growing family needing more space, without sacrificing budget. We believe we hit a home run with this design. Square footage was maximized by using an open floor plan concept. Notice the size of the dining room, a generous 11’4 x 14’3. The only elements separating the dining room from the vaulted great room and kitchen/breakfast areas are strategically placed, elegant columns (see interior illustration). Another feature that adds to the family-friendly floor plan is the back foyer/laundry room off the garage. The cabinet area can be used for storing coats, shoes, etc. We also decided to split the bedrooms to give mom and dad a little privacy. The master bedroom has its own foyer and access to the covered rear porch.

Farm House Plans and Farmhouse Design
Farm House Plans and Farmhouse Design
Farmhouse-style home plans symbolize the characteristics of the Midwest and Northeast farmers who built them: practicality, purity, and endurance. Perhaps it’s these ideals that attract so many to this simple house style. Typical attributes of Farmhouse plans include a square symmetrical shape, sometimes with side wings. Deep and wide wrap- around front porches may include spindlework and brackets. Farmhouse floor plans feature large kitchens as the central work and living space. This collection brings together our favorite Farmhouse house plans from some of the best home designers in the nation and includes country farm house plans and Victorian farmhouses.

Vacation Home Plans and Vacation House Floor Plans
Vacation Home Plans and Vacation House Floor Plans
So, you’ve found the perfect vacation home site and now you just need the perfect floor plan! This group of vacation home plans is diverse for a reason—no two home sites are alike. Yet, all of these home plans feature efficient living spaces orientated towards windows that showcase the view. In addition, easy-care finishes and minimal maintenance exteriors will help ensure a home design that safeguards your vacation. Vacation home plans are not a specific style of architecture so this collection is comprised of styles such as contemporary, a-frame, cottage, and craftsman to name a few. Vacation house plans typically have smaller floor plans as they are usually a second home.

COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHT (CFL) SAVINGS CALCULATOR
You already know that using compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) will save you money. But exactly how much money are you (or will you be) saving?

The CFL savings calculator will tell you. Download the CFL Savings Calculator (XLS File).
Simply answer a few questions...

• How much does your electricity cost?
• What is your time worth?
• How long does it take you to change a bulb?
• How long is that light on every day?
• How much does an incandescent and CFL bulb cost you?

...and you will learn how much time and money you have saved every year!

Now, imagine what you can do with that extra time and money, especially if you replace a handful of light bulbs. And remember, as the cost of electricity rises, your CFL will pay off even more.

When Selecting a CFL Bulb

  1. Make sure it is bright enough. Generally, a 15 W CFL produces as much light as a 60 Watt incandescent, a 20 W CFL = 75 W incandescent, and a 25 W CFL = 100 W incandescent.
  2. Choose the right color. Natural sunlight has a Color Rendering Index (CRI) value of 100. Select a bulb with a CRI of 80 or above, which means that it replicates colors well. Also, choose a CFL that has a "temperature" between 2700 K and 3000 K. The lower the number, the warmer the light, but too low gets gloomy. Too high--some fluorescent bulbs are closer to 4000 K--and the bulbs give off that 'industrial' bluish color.
  3. Choose ENERGY STAR. ENERGY STAR qualified bulbs will not flicker or delay like some of the old CFLs you might have seen--even old ENERGY STAR qualified bulbs had this problem--and they are likely to be the right color.
  4. Some CFLs can be used on dimmers. They cost more. If the box doesn't mention that the bulb can be dimmed, don't place it on the fixture. Dimmers can greatly shorten the life of non-dimmable CFLs and even be a fire hazard.
